What is the European Accessibility Act?

The European Accessibility Act is an EU directive aimed at ensuring that key products and services, including digital publications, are accessible to people with disabilities.

Adopted across EU member states, the Act will come into effect on 28 June 2025 and has important implications for the publishing industry.

Publishers will need to ensure that ebooks and other digital publications comply with accessibility standards, making content navigable and readable for all users, including those using assistive technologies. This includes adapting formats like EPUB and PDF to support screen readers, alt text, and structured navigation.
